Sie arbeitete sich von der Stenografin zur als Filmeditorin hoch. Ihre Arbeit für die Stierkampfszenen in Blood and Sand, einem großen Erfolg von Rudolph Valentino, war so brillant, dass James Cruze sie zur Chef-Editorin von The Covered Wagon aus dem Folgejahr machte. 1927 drehte sie ihren ersten eigenen Film Fashions for Women als Regisseurin und wurde in der Umbruchphase vom Stummfilm zum Tonfilm sehr bekannt. Sie war die erste Frau, die der Directors Guild of America beitrat.
