Savigny, a founder of the German Historical School of Law and one of the 19th century's most eminent and influential German law professors, writes to the French legal historian Charles Guenoux with instructions for the French translation of Savigny's principal work, "Geschichte des römischen Rechts im Mittelalter" ("History of Roman Law in the Middle Ages"). Savigny recommends a terminological improvement, replacing "Germanie" with "Germaniques": "Cependant je suis bien loin de la prétention de juger le style Français de cet essai [...] Je préfererai: à tous les juges Germaniques. Car Germanie désigne le pays que nous appelons L'Allemagne [...]". - Small tear due to opening of the seal. Traces of old folds.
