Stephen Hales
Physiologe, 1677-1761
Stephen Hales war ein englischer Theologe, Pfarrer, Naturforscher, Physiologe und Erfinder. Von Untersuchungen zur Physiologie der Muskelbewegung ausgehend gelang Hales erstmals die tierexperimentelle Bestimmung des arteriellen und venösen Blutdrucks, veröffentlicht in „Haemastatics“ (1733). Im Alleingang war er Mitbegründer der Pflanzenphysiologie, Erfinder und Wegbereiter der Präventivmedizin und gilt als einer der Begründer der modernen Physiologie. Er beschäftigte sich mit quantitativen Studien zur Verdunstung, bestimmte den Wurzeldruck der aufsteigenden Säfte, und entdeckte die Fähigkeit der Pflanzen gasförmige Stoffe zu speichern, dargelegt in „Vegetable Staticks“ (1727).
