Glenn Gould

Pianist, 1932-1982

Nice head and shoulders profile portrait of Gould seated at the piano. Profoundly gifted Canadian pianist, composer, and commentator (1932–1980) who takes a place among most visionary performing artists in the history of music. After giving up a successful concert career in 1964, Gould devoted the remainder of his life to recording and producing radio documentaries on a wide variety of topics. Though he had a wide-ranging and often unconventional repertoire, he remains best known for his timeless interpretations of Bach. Though incredibly gifted, Gould—like most creative geniuses—also had a few personal quirks that were difficult to overlook.

For example, he disliked social functions and being touched, and would often cancel performances at the last minute. Near the end of his life he limited personal contact, relying instead on the telephone or letters for communication. The year Gould signed this image is also the year of one of the most bizarre tales involving the pianist. During a visit to historic Steinway Hall in New York City, the chief piano technician slapped Gould on the back as a greeting. Gould complained of aching, lack of coordination, and fatigue due to the incident, and threatened a lawsuit against Steinway & Sons if his apparent injuries were permanent! Items signed by Gould are few and far between, and very seldom offered for sale..
