Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Born in Kassel, Gerhardt followed his teacher Johann Werner Henschel to Rome in 1844, where he lived until shortly before his death. He created a large oeuvre in classicist style, the majority of which is today located in Kassel. - Traces of a small oval postal stamp. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
