Federico García Lorca war ein spanischer Lyriker und Dramatiker. Er gehört zu den führenden Gestalten der Generación del 27, zu der Dichter wie Vicente Aleixandre, Dámaso Alonso, Rafael Alberti, Pedro Salinas, Jorge Guillén oder Gerardo Diego zählen. Zusammen mit Ramón del Valle-Inclán erneuerte er das spanische Theater, das in spätromantischen Formeln und in einem flachen Naturalismus erstarrt war. Seinen literarischen Durchbruch erlebte Lorca im Jahr 1935: gleichzeitig waren drei seiner Stücke an Barceloner Theatern zu sehen, und mit sechs Auflagen war sein „Romancero gitano“ der meistverkaufte Gedichtband des Jahrhunderts.

"– The Bitter Root – There is a bitter root and a world of a thousand windows. Not even the smallest hand can break the water's door. Where are you going? Where to? Where? There is a sky of a thousand windows – a battle of livid bees – and there is a bitter root. Bitter. It hurts in the sole of the foot, the inside of the face, and it hurts in the fresh trunk of a newly cut night. Love! My enemy! Bite your bitter root!" With minimal deviations from the printed version. At the top, the dedication: "Para Julio Casal." The Uruguayan poet Julio José Casal, founder of the magazine Alfar, was friends with García Lorca; the two met, among other occasions, in the autumn of 1933 during García Lorca's stay in Argentina and Uruguay.
Autographs by García Lorca are exceedingly rare. „– La raiz amarga – Hay una raíz amarga y un mundo de mil ventanas. Ni la mano más pequeña quiebra la puerta del agua. ¿Dónde vas? ¿adónde? ¿dónde? Hay un cielo de mil ventanas – batalla de abejas lívidas – y hay una raíz amarga. Amarga. Duele en la planta del pie, el interior de la cara, y duele en el tronco fresco de noche recién cortada. ¡Amor! Enemigo mío ¡Muerde tu raíz amarga!“.
