To an unidentified correspondent, declining a lecture invitation. Galsworthy explains that the matter had originally been left on the understanding that he would be contacted again after two months to determine whether he might have a paper available to read, but as no further approach was made he "dismissed the idea from my mind." Having since accepted other commitments, he regrets that he can undertake no further engagements and suggests that "the Secretary mistook or misread my letter." In a characteristically dry aside, he remarks that by accepting invitations to Halifax and Huddersfield he has "quite sufficiently invaded Yorkshire for this year," adding: "Lecturing is not my business, & I only do it reluctantly." A revealing letter from the Nobel laureate, illustrating his well-known reluctance to appear on the public lecture circuit despite his growing literary fame.
Written in 1912, at the height of the success of The Forsyte Saga, the letter reflects Galsworthy's preference for the writer's desk over the lecture platform, a sentiment frequently expressed throughout his career..
