To an unknown recipient: „I have read your poems with much interest and considerable sympathy, since I have often been reminded of my own ideas and emotions of youth. At the same time, I hesitate to express any opinion about the book as art, for, with your unquestionable energy and ambition, it is highly probable that your work later will be quite unlike this. At present there are far too many reminiscences of other writers for you as poetic and artistic individuality to be clearly discerned. My belief that the attainment of freer forms grows more quite sure that it is in that direction that your skill lies.
The more close movement has, no doubt, been a very energetic one, but it has scarcely yielded much of very great value, and it now seems nearly exhausted. So much of the force of poetry lies in the simple, natural, and direct way (without the awkward inversions) you are still better inclined to achieve and weld, which it moves within severer forms. I am setting down my sincere impressions and trust you will not feel offended at the chance of mere compliments. I look forward to seeing more of your later works.“.
