To Dr. Hale in Geneva, West New York: „Your letter of rail road was received. Unfortunately, the funds of our college—The Great Legacy to St. Catharine's—has dwindled down from $40,000 to $15,000 as I am told, and this latter sum [unclear] to give to the [unclear] city division. I see our friend Mr. Wood occasionally in the street but learn nothing of his success. It is doubtless very uphill work in these times, the caution of the state being now only twelve million, when last year at this time it was twenty million. […] Grace Church Rochester is in pecuniary difficulty—about a $4000 mortgage with an insurance company here in New York.

I have been trying to help them. The company is easy to complain of bad insurance. The salary they have heretofore paid is $700. I do not think that Wood will leave Buffalo. His wife is here and very much better. We have nothing new in the city but the arrival of a reputed historian—Bishop—under the auspices of our Presbyterian brothers. His name is Max Johannes, I have not seen him. Await his introduction feeling it necessary to stand aloof from distinguished strangers for a while. I had a very pleasant visit to St. Paul’s College Flushing on Sunday and was especially gratified by their church services. We made our way to see & hear an organ in Geneva College—Hawks has a splendid establishment but there lies for him with the encumbrance of his primary. I undoubtedly am there to help. […]“.
