H. D. Dakin humorously reflects on receiving a Navy medal with little merit and discusses professional matters, including the success of a recent lecture and plans for a colleague's nomination. He expresses his admiration and extends warm regards to the recipient (Dear Hans). „You are an angel to write to me about the Navy medal. I knew I had it when I saw you earlier in the week but was afraid to tell you for fear that you might laugh, which would be embarrassing for us both! When I read the list of honor recipients, I hang my head with shame.
At least, I have the distinction of having got the medal with less merit than any of them. The fact is, Lister has been steadily feeding a good section of the R.S. Council since the war started, & they had to do something. By the way, I am sorry I was so stupid when I saw you last and did not know that the Dunham lecture had been given by you—I hear they were a howling success with the best attendance ever known. I still thought that they were ahead of you, but as I told you, I never get a review even though Harvard would never have got the lectureship without my cooperation! I feel very happy to think that you will propose Major next spring & if Rudolph Anderson would second it, it would be superb. If R.A. would rather not do so, I am sure A. G. Richards would sign—or, alternatively, he would send R.A. a letter arguing Major’s claims. The talk just as we do about the late Council’s action & describe it as “worthy of the Pharmacological Society at its worst!” Dakin wurde in London geboren, seine Familie zog nach Leeds, als er 13 war. 1898 begann er ein Studium an der University of Leeds, wo er 1901 einen Bachelor-Abschluss machte..
