Maler, 1888-1978
Giorgio de Chirico gilt als Hauptvertreter der Pittura metafisica, der sogenannten Metaphysischen Malerei, die als eine der wichtigsten Vorläufer des Surrealismus angesehen wird. Um 1930 wandte er sich einer betont barocken und pathetischen Malweise zu, kritisierte die moderne Malerei scharf und malte fortan in einem klassizistischen, akademischen Stil. Da er mit diesen Bildern nicht genug verdiente, kopierte und verkaufte er auch Werke seiner metaphysischen Epoche, weshalb die Datierung „echter“ Chiricos oft nicht einfach ist.

Reste la question du prix que vous m'offrez. - Moi je veux bien vous être agréable et faire un prix d'ami, mais je vous dirai que d'après votre lettre je n'ai pas bien compris exactement quelle serait le [...] 'volume' de mon travail.

In Italian, to the Milanese gallery owner Vittorio Barbaroux, announcing that he will produce four new canvases ("quadri metafisici") inspired by the success of his metaphysical painting. De Chirico states that he has received all payments except one from Argentina, for which he asks his friend for help. In exchange, he offers him one of his works as a token of appreciation ("un mio ricordo in segno di riconoscenza"). He reassures him as to the quality and subject matter of the works with which he will soon entrust him for his Milan exhibition, giving their dimensions: "Ettore e Andromaca - mis.
100 x 70; Interno metafisico - 97 x 68; Trovatore - 63 x 50; Piazza d'Italia - 95 x 70", all of which are said to be very beautiful and which he is in no hurry to sell. He warns Barbaroux of the young painter Piero Zuffi, an adventurer who sent him the picture of a painting for authentication. He considers this "quadro metafisico con biscotti" a fake, and has given Zuffi a reply to this effect. Zuffi, having just returned penniless from a sojourn in France, would go on to enjoy a successful career as a theatre designer at Giorgio Strehler's Piccolo Teatro, then at La Scala in Milan. - Perforated. To Marcello Anchorena about his struggle to obtain a declaration from the president of an artistic society of the official Paris salons, a document he needs to show his work at a salon and to prove that the works exhibited were requested from the artist by invitation and not without his knowledge or through assembling the works from collectors or dealers: "Il faudrait une déclaration du Président d'une, ou de deux des plus anciennes Société artistiques des Salons officiels de Paris, dans laquelle déclaration le dit Président cite aussi l'article du règlement (avec le numéro de l'article), pour que cela soit bien clair que d'après l'article numéro ...
du règlement de la Société Nationale des Artistes Français (c'est, je crois, la plus ancienne), les oeuvres exposés sont demandés aux artistes par invitation etc. [...] sûrement il y'a un ou quelques articles (ou paragraphes) d'après lesquels il resulte que le Salon ne peut pas exposer les oeuvres d'un artiste français vivant sans rien lui dire, à son insu, et en allant chercher les oeuvres chez des collectionneurs ou des marchands [...] C'est incroyable combien c'est difficile d'avoir ce que je demande. Il y a quelques années j'ai aussi essayé d'avoir ces documents pour moi tellement nécessaires; mais je n'ai eu que des choses à côté. Jänner 1928 [?]. 1¾ SS. 8°. – An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten mit dem Ersuchen, ihm seine verspätete Antwort nachzusehen. Seine Frau habe eine Blindarmentzündung gehabt, sei aber jetzt wieder völlig genesen, und er selbst habe seine aus diesem Grund vorübergehend unterbrochene Arbeit wieder aufgenommen: „Excusez-moi si je réponds si tard à vos deux aimables lettres; ces derniers temps ma femme a été malade d’une petite crise d’appendicite; maintenant elle est tout-à-fait retablie. J’ai repris mon travail que j’ai du interrompre pendant plusieurs jours; je m’occupe aussi de vos gravures et j’espère pouvoir remettre les […] à Walter le 15 fevrier prochain. – Si je ne me trompe vous devez approcher au terme de votre vie militaire; j’espère donc vous revoir bientôt à Paris ; ma femme me charge de ses amitiés pour vous, et moi je vous prie de croire, cher ami, à mes sentiments bien sincères et bien devoués […]”.
