Marc Chagall

Maler, 1887-1985

Chagall thanks Lotte Levy in London for her letter, and regrets that she didn’t receive the last letter he wrote to her in response. - On stationery with printed letterhead „Les Collines“.

Postcard signed and illustrated in Chagall’s hand to Jean Leymarie, sent from „La Colline“, Chagall’s retreat in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, „[…] They enjoyed it and send their love. The postcard shows signature-illustrations by Chagall such as the sun, a hand holding on to a branch and his profile signed „Marc Chagall“. Marc Chagall is considered one of the most idiosyncratic artists of the 20th century.

With seemingly dreamy pictorial motifs, floating and flying figures, hybrid beings between humans and animals - and by lovers. Chagall always resisted being called a dreamer: „Call me a dreamer. On the contrary, I am a realist. I love the earth! I am a painter who is unconsciously conscious.“ For Chagall his motifs are linked with memories and meanings. Many of his seemingly surreal scenes come from the proverbs of the Jewish language, his childhood memories and his experience as a displaced and homeless Jew in exile. After World War II Chagall moved to Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the Côte d’Azur. Matisse and Picasso also lived nearby..

To Haim Gamzou (1910-1982), director of the Art Museum in Tel Aviv, concerning his works for the state hall of the Knesset building and for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Chagall expresses his sorrow about not being able to attend the opening of the Knesset, because he was tied up with finishing three tapestries ("Gobelins") that he wants to donate to the Knesset. Meanwhile he had been to America where he surveyed the installation of his tapestries at the New Metropolitan Opera. Unfortunately Chagall has to visit America a second time in January to work on Mozart's Magic Flute.

- Chagall created two big wall paintings, located in the entrance hall, for the opening of a new building of the "Met" on 16. IX. 1966. For the Knesset Chagall designed, next to floor mosaics, as well three large tapestries that were unveiled on 18. VI. 1969. - Slightly creased; small hole outside the text area..

To Jacques Guenne, editor of "L'Art vivant". A moving autobiography in which Chagall recalls his childhood in the Tsarist Empire and his early years of artistic training: "My father, with blue eyes and hands covered with calluses, worked, prayed and kept silent all his life. I too was silent. I did not know what I was going to do... I had delicate hands and I sought a daintier occupation, and the most important thing, which would not make me turn away from the sky and the stars [...] In my province I have never heard the words art, the artist.

But one day a comrade came to see me and, seeing my drawings, exclaimed: 'But you are a true artist'. What's an artist?, I asked". He also recalls his arrival in Paris in 1910 and his reaction to the works of the major artists of the second half of the 19th century: "At the Louvre I was afraid of Delacroix, Courbet, Manet, and soon my studio was full of paintings". He describes the evolution of his style, of his aesthetic ideas: "Everything around me, from the impressionists to the cubists, seemed too realistic [...] What tempted me the most was the invisible or so-called illogical side of form and spirit, without which the external truth was not complete for me, without resorting to the fantastic" (transl.). - Some stains, tiny marginal tears, a few small holes in the first leaft, but overall in fine condition..
