Fidel Castro war mit der Bewegung des 26. Juli (M-26-7) die treibende Kraft der kubanischen Revolution gegen den Diktator Batista im Jahre 1959 gewesen. Er war unter anderem Regierungschef, Staatspräsident und Vorsitzender der Kommunistischen Partei Kubas. Mit insgesamt 49 Jahren war Castro der am längsten regierende nichtmonarchische Herrscher des 20. und beginnenden 21. Jahrhunderts gewesen. Anfang 2008 trat er endgültig von seinen politischen Ämtern zurück.
