"Josephine Baker kam in jungen Jahren durch die Bekanntschaft des damals in den USA äußerst populären deutschen Dichters Karl Gustav Vollmoeller zu Engagements in Berlin und Paris. Mit ihrem Tanz eroberte sie im Sturm das Pariser Publikum, das erstmals einen Charleston zu sehen bekam. Sie trat in zwei Revuen von Louis Kenarchand auf, in denen sie mit ihrem berühmten Bananenröckchen tanzte. ""J’ai deux amours"", ""Aux Îles Hawai"" und ""Pretty Little Baby"" zählten zu ihren erfolgreichsten Liedern. 1937 nahm sie durch Heirat die französische Staatsbürgerschaft an. Das Erlebnis eines Massenpogroms in ihrer Kindheit prägte sie so stark, dass sie zu einer engagierten Kämpferin gegen Rassismus wurde."

Intriguing correspondence from her 1963 tour through the USA, mentioning the death of Edith Piaf and Jean Cocteau, as well as the Kennedy assassination. New York (The New York Hilton) 11 and 12 October. Having arrived safely, things appear to be developing well and her act is selling: “toute est vendue”. As she has some appointments regarding the books and film, she is postponing her return and asks Kenza to join her and bring several documents and costumes she forgot. She mentions her efforts to contact Stephen Papich in California, who will become her biographer later on, and who might be able to help her fight racial discrimination in case of trouble. The press has welcomed her with great enthusiasm, everything is going well and she counts on making a lot of money. Regarding the deaths of Edith Piaf and Jean Cocteau she supposes that the addressee has sent flowers for 15,000 AF each: “Je suppose que tu a envoyer les fleurs pour la pauvre Piaf et Cocteau 15000 AF chaque”. She has caught a cold and is always tired due to the time lag. Philadelphia (The Bellevue Stratford) 17 and 18 October. She mentions a triumph, a secure future, being about to sign some contracts for about two months and a great salary one can only make in America: “Un trionphe, alors l'avenir assuré [...] Je suis en train de faire les contracts ici, pour environ 2 mois [...] avec des prix formidable que seule on peut faire dans ce pays”. Her reviews are excellent, however, her engagements won‘t start prior to mid-November and she needs immediate revenue. She balances her accounts and gives instructions for her affairs, her future contracts and for solving her financial troubles, bringing up the necessity to find somebody in Switzerland to help them out financially. She aims at gaining some time, because although they‘ve won the battle and all of America is at their feet it will take her some time to fully establish herself, as success has come so suddenly: “car malgré que nous avons gagné la bataille complètement ici le toute Amerique est à nos pied comme avant il faut le temps pour avoir des ettablissements car le success est venu d'un coup”. Coincidentally, Le Mirror, which has given her such a hard time, has closed. The USA are under her belt once again, which should be kept that way as they seem to be an unlimited source of money: “Les USA sont dans notre poche de nouveau, et il faut le garder car c'est ici l'argent, et sans limite”. She sends some of her reviews, speaking of continuing triumph and postpones her return since their ability to gain a loan in Switzerland depends on this contract: “car c'est sur ce contracte que nous allons pouvoir avoir du crédit en Suisse”. New York (Essex House) 22 October. She seizes the opportuniy to conclude important affairs and mentions the whole world wanting her now, which is a success she naturally wants to profit from: “toute le monde me veux maintenant que c'est un succes et naturellement je veux en profiter”. There are the engagements, the books and the film, all of which will provide her with financial security rendering the need of bank loans unnecessary as her occupation alone will guarantee stability at some point: “une assurance financière où il y aura plus besoin des pretes des banques car mon seul métier me garantie toute cela”. She has enjoyed the spectacle of Marie Bell, who however is no competition to her own success in New York and Philadelphia: “mais le success que j'ai ici à New York et Philadelphia est hors concours”. She asks for news from Les Milandes and gives some instructions for handling her affairs etc. New York (Essex House) 24 November. About the events that have taken place since her departure (“Que des evenements depuis mon départ de la maison”), the assassination of President Kennedy, then the assassination of the assassin: “ensuite, l'assassinat du l'assassin”. She has been to Washington for the funeral and explains that there will be one month of national mourning: “Il y a 1 mois de deuil national”. Her spectacle will be postponed to 27 December at best, as everything is standing still. She talks about her book project, the author of which she has met; a well-known writer in the US, to whom the Opera Mundi is ready to advance 25 or 30,000 dollars. She also demands an advance for her tour in May, gives intructions for handling her affairs and her finances, and asks for news about Les Milandes (professor, cook, chambermaid). The city of Integrate in the state of New York will twin itself with Les Milandes. She concludes by bringing up the presence of great notables at Kennedy's funeral, such as de Gaulle and the emperor of Ethiopia: “Le grand succes des notabilités venu pour l'enterrement etc de Gaulle en tete ensuite l'empereur de l'Éthiopie”. Enclosed are an ALS by Jacques Abtey to his wife Jacqueline (Copenhagen, 29. VIII. 1963) as well as 2 typescript copies of letters by Bernd W. Heinricht to Tino Davini about Jacques Abtey‘s work, with autograph notes by Abtey.
