"Als Navy-Pilot nahm Armstrong ab 1950 am Koreakrieg teil, als NASA-Testpilot wurde er 1958 von der US-Luftwaffe für das Projekt „Man In Space Soonest“ (MISS) ausgewählt. In seiner ersten Zeit als Astronaut übernahm er für das Gemini-Programm als Spezialgebiet die Simulatoren. Er war Kommandant der Apollo 11, der ersten bemannten Raumfahrtmission, die unter seinem Kommando mit Buzz Aldrin und Michael Collins zum Mond flog. 1969 betrat er als erster Mensch den Mond und formulierte den wohl berühmtesten Versprecher der Geschichte: “That’s one small step for man … one … giant leap for mankind"" („Das ist ein kleiner Schritt für den Menschen … ein … riesiger Sprung für die Menschheit“)."

Nussink“, die ihm wegen einer zu vermachenden Erbschaft schrieb „In a word, I have a considerable fortune and no heir“: 1. „I must admit that I have never received such a request before, and I have given the matter a good deal of thought prior to replying. First I must thank you for what is, most assuredly, a most significant honor. To place your estate in the hands of one you do not know except by reputation expresses a measure of esteem that is unique in a world fulll of extraordinary happenings.
I am honored to aceept. You indicated that you regard my work as important, and I believe that to be true also. Nevertheless, I would hope to see that the inheritance is used in a manner consistent with your highest ideals and hopes. Of course, I would be pleased to use a Trust or other legal mechanism to assure that result […]“ - 2. „[…] I received your kind letter with mixed emotions. […]“- Der Schriftsteller Winfried Bornemann (geb. 1944) ist bekannt für Bücher mit seinen Juxbriefen an Unternehmen, Prominente und Behörden samt deren Antwortschreiben. Das erste Buch „Zu Schade … zum Wegradieren“, das er zusammen mit seinem Schwager verfasste, enthält neben humorvollen Zeichnungen nur wenige dieser Briefe. Für das Buch „Bornemanns lachende Erben“ (1985) schrieb Bornemann unter dem Pseudonym „Carola von Gaestern“ verschiedene Prominente an, um diesen das Erbe jener fiktiven Witwe eines reichen Unternehmers in Aussicht zu stellen. 1988 erschien sein Buch „Glanz & Gloria. Eine Brief-Aktion mit internationalen Stars“..

An George W. Barber in Suffolk, England: „[…] Thank you for the delightful post cards. I have enjoyed them very much and I appreciate your thoughtfulness in taking the time to share them with me. […]“ - 1970 wurde Armstrong zum stellvertretenden Leiter des Washingtoner Aeronautikbüros der NASA befördert. Im gleichen Jahr erhielt er auch den Master in Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik an der University of Southern California und einen Ehrendoktor in Ingenieurwissenschaften von der Purdue-Universität. 1971 verließ er die Behörde.

To Doris Weber whom he addresses as “Punky.” With an additional DS bearing his signature “M/M N. A. Armstrong.” “Thank you for your letter breaking the news that we are 60 years older than when we graduated. I remember when my Uncle Ray came back to St. Marys for his 40th and visited us. I thought I would never get old enough to get to a 40th anniversary of graduation. My calendar currently has the June and August dates available, but not July 28th. I have no preference between June and August.
I, of course, will be there is at all possible. I look forward to seeing you and the rest of the gang. 60? Really?...” The single-page, printed reservation form, signed “M/M N.A. Armstrong,” reads “Enclosed please find reservation money for dinner & photo. Pleae [sic] make checks payable to Doris Weber...” The envelope for Armstrong’s letter, sent to Doris Weber, is docketed in her hand, “Neil’s letter to me,” and the registration form envelope has the return address and that of the addressee handwritten by Armstrong. Armstrong graduated Wapakoneta, Ohio’s Blume High School in 1947..
